I Think of Eden

by Rebecca J. Gomez

I THINK OF EDEN

In my morning walks in the garden,

I think of Eden.

I imagine that fertile soil,

the dew drops glistening

on every perfect bloom,

dappled sunshine that glimmers

like glowing glimpses of His glory.

I share the path with him,

the master gardener

who planted it all

and trusted me to tend it.

I kneel now in my backyard flower bed

fighting weeds that

must once have been companions,

not competitors,

sharing sun and soil and life.

But this strife is all they know now.

I can almost hear them groaning,

anticipating a world made new

as I pull them

one by one

from the soil.

I pause,

forearms scratched and itching,

forehead smeared with dirt and sweat

and smile at the slight reprieve that

slips through the garden gate:

a gentle breeze that graces my face,

inviting me into the cool

of an Eden morning.
