Spring Will Come Again

by Jodie Gerling

SPRING WILL COME AGAIN

“Spring will come again,”

they say.

Whether it’s a mark on a calendar

or an unknown date on a scarred soul.

Either way, it will take time.

Creation’s Great Creator

could have whisked the world into existence,

but instead, He chose to take seven days.

He could have made the depths,

to the valleys, to the peaks in a moment,

and owned it,

that it was instantly done.

But instead, God paused His brush,

and hushed,

with His Authority, His Glory

over each category

of beast and bush and breath.

Whether the first Spring in Eden,

or waiting for renewal within,

either way, Spring came,

and Spring will come again.

“Spring will come again,”

they say.

Whether a literal anticipation,

an exciting invitation

for leaves and bees

and blossoms on the trees.

Or, maybe, it’s just a platitude,

disguised as hope-filled gratitude,

or an encouragement

that what we just went through

will soon be replaced with joy.

We hope that, too.

That Winter’s cold grasp

would relax the hold that its had

on our tightened stomach and soul,

and give way to a peace

that will only fully release

when we trust God’s will over our own.

Either way, Spring comes again.

“Spring will come again,”

they say.

Those who’ve read the Scriptures.

Those who’ve known and seen

and witnessed the healing

of dry bones rejoicing

as a new day of mercy dawns.

Spring is not only

a hope for the lonely,

but a promise renewed daily

with each sunrise stroke of the brush

from the One who Created

in His own time, while we waited,

for all to be made new.

Whether droplets of dew

on the petals, now full bloom

or the shattered pieces

He’s pieced back together again.

Either way, Hope did not disappoint,

because Spring did come,

and eternal Spring will come soon.
