Superbloom
by Brit McReynolds
SUPERBLOOM
Even the desert is a garden for God’s use.
The cactus knows how to hold its water there
and in due season bloom,
boasting more than thorns upon their heads,
radiant beauty for a time,
crowns of glory in either sense.
How often I have found myself there,
soul weary and cracked lips,
wandering barren places
begging stones to split their faces.
Does the God who split the rock
through Moses’s staff still live here?
But every so often, the heavens yield more rain
then this dry place knows what to do with
and the ground breaks out in songs
that color the hills in majesty—
a superbloom of mercy
giving back a fragrant offering.
Yes, God is still God in the wastelands,
weaving stories of beauty through endurance.
I will praise him for the days he sees me through
and when he pours forth extra rains
my heart will superbloom.
