The Grave and Other Poems
by Zane Paxton
THE GRAVE
There’s an old grave
in the garden,
but one filled with
Life.
The decay of
this place
was renewed within its eyes;
re-bloomed under the
sight of its cobbled stones.
Buried bones quake and are shaken home
to find rest alone,
beneath this shadow.
Surrounded now by hallowed ground
and all around is light.
The breath of ones
who rise inside this
echo.
As if resurrection bled out
and poured down, onto
each petal.
RIVER
You glisten beneath
the shade tree.
Meandering aimless
it seems, but still—
moving.
Rippling along like
listening to the earth-song
is more wonderful
than progressing
to an end.
And I know you’re clear,
but I like to imagine this
nourished blue is far
more than just your
view of the sky.
To lean my hand close
enough to touch is to
feel satisfied—to
realize that life
comes from a source that
lends its supply.
And yours is infinite.
